Force Gender Advisor Meets with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General to Discuss NPF's Transformative Gender Policies
Abuja, Nigeria - The Force Gender Advisor to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), AIGAishatuAbubakarBaju, OON, mni, on Tuesday, the 26th of August, 2025, met with Her Excellency Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, to discuss the Nigeria Police Force's (NPF) groundbreaking gender policies and initiatives.
During the meeting, the Force Gender Advisor briefed the UN Deputy Secretary-General on the IGP's commitment to promoting gender inclusivity and mainstreaming within the NPF, aligning with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and Mr. President's Renewed Hope Agenda on Inclusivity. The initiatives highlighted included the development of the NPF Gender Policy, expansion of Gender Desks to divisional levels to enhance response to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases, and the IGP's pledge to make the NPF an equal opportunity institution.
The Force Gender Advisor also emphasized the IGP's dedication to integrating gender mainstreaming as an administrative tool in all police systems and operations. Furthermore, she extended an invitation to the UN Deputy Secretary-General to join the celebration of 70 years of Women in Policing in Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in the history of the NPF.
The UN Deputy Secretary-General commended the IGP's efforts in promoting gender mainstreaming within the NPF, describing the initiatives as exemplary. She assured the Force Gender Advisor of her commitment to support the NPF in empowering women police officers, particularly in areas of capacity building, peacebuilding, and peacekeeping operations. Her Excellency Amina J. Mohammed also pledged to support the operationalization and implementation of the NPF Gender Policy.
The meeting concluded with the UN Deputy Secretary-General expressing her enthusiasm to participate in the 70th-anniversary celebration of Women in Policing in Nigeria, a testament to the strong partnership between the NPF and the United Nations.
